Please describe the aggressive history:
After seeing a behaviorist about his bite history, they said that he does have anxiety but is not an aggressive dog. Most of his behavioral issues are around his innate Border Collie instincts. We live in an apartment; he does not have a job in the house and has a lot of pent up energy. Due to his traumatic past (before being brought to the SPCA where we rescued him), he has anxiety that he does have to work through. When we rescued him he was too old for puppy classes and not trained up enough for basic training classes. Over the year we have had him, our other dog has mentored him how to sit, lay, rollover, shake, and puppy dog eyes for food. We have worked with him on walking away from situations that he feels uncomfortable with. He knows his kennel is a safe place and will run there if he feels anxious. He has bitten 4 different women including his owner. He only gives warning nips but does not latch on aggressively. In the moment that he does bite, it appears that he does not realize he has done it until afterwards. The behavioralist said that this is a moment of PTSD trauma that takes over for a moment and his border collie instinct of herding you back with a warning nip kicks in. After starting his seizure medication, all of his triggers have been tested again and he does not show any sign of biting or aggression. Dog sitter – after a walk in the rain the dog sitter went to wipe his paws. After a warning growl that he gave she went back again to wipe his paws and Max gave a warning nip. Immediately afterwards he went back to his normal happy self confused why she was upset or what had happened. Neighbor – at the dog park the other dog that we have was barking at a very small dog and the owner picked up her dog to get him away from my dog. At that moment Max nipped at the owner to rescue the dog. Mother of Owner – she went to stop him from running out the front door and in that moment he nipped her arm that was blocking the door. He immediately knew he was in trouble and laid down submissively Female owner – Over the year he has bitten me several times. First time we brought him home he peed in the house (since he was not housebroken) and he bit me for yelling at him. I stopped him from jumping out of the car at the dog park before getting leashed up and he bit my arm. I pet him while he was sleeping in his kennel and he bit my finger. I pet his butt when he was already on alert outside and he bit my hand. I separated him from having fun playing with his brother so I could clean and he bit my hand. Each time that he has bit me, it is only a nip and he instantly backs off to his own corner or to his kennel to back away from the situation. Most times when he is anxious he just pees but the very rare times that he has given us a warning nip it is due to us blocking him from escaping, cornering him into an area, or petting him while sleeping or in no touch spots on his body. Since starting the medication for his seizures all his triggers for biting has gone away and he no longer shows any signs of biting or aggression.
Does the dog have any history of aggression towards other animals?
Yes
Please describe the animal aggression history:
Neighbor dog – small Chihuahua always barks at Max through the fence. Max knows to go inside during these moments. It was out of character but he slipped out of his collar and went straight for the dog during a walk.
Reasons for rehoming:
We both work full time and live in an apartment. We realize that Max needs more space and attention than we can provide. We are seeking a home that can offer the lifestyle he deserves. The ideal environment is a house with adults, no cats, and a yard where he can chase squirrels, foxes, or bunnies off your land.
Paragraph Text
Meet Max! He is a charming Border Collie/Lab mix who is just over 2 years old. He was rescued from a difficult situation . Despite his challenging start, Max has made significant progress over the year we have had him. He can be a bit anxious around new people, especially women, and prefers a gentle approach when meeting someone new. When friends and family come over he looks forward to new people to play with. Max loves to run and play, showing off his high prey drive with toys. He is incredibly intelligent and thrives in a pack environment where he can learn from a older mentor. Max will do well in a home where his energy and intelligence can be channeled in positive ways. We both work full time and live in an apartment. We realize that Max needs more space and attention than we can provide. We are seeking a home that can offer the lifestyle he deserves. The ideal environment is a house with adults, no cats, and a yard where he can chase squirrels, foxes, or bunnies off your land. He gets car sick with winding roads and is better with the windows down. Before you continue reading his application please note that he recently started seizure medication and all his behavioral issues have gone away. We have tested his anxiety triggers and he no longer shows any signs for aggression or biting.

Anything else that you’d like for us to know?
He has a high play drive due to having two working dog breeds running through him. He loves to shred approved items (plastic bags, amazon packages, cardboard, and water bottles). He loves a good squeaker toy but prefers to retrieve the toy for you to throw it again and again. He is set to be relinquished to a local shelter January 8th. It is a kill shelter and he does have a bite history and is on seizure medication. We truly want to rehome him and give him the life he deserves.
