Reasons for rehoming: We’ve had her since she was a puppy so this has not been an easy decision. Our life situation has dramatically changed in multiple ways in the last year, and despite our best efforts, we are not able to manage her physical and health needs. We are heartbroken, but would feel at peace knowing she would be going to a good home.
Biography: Cassie is a beautiful and sweet 10 year old pure bred sable border collie. She is smart as a whip and is the perfect agility dog. She knows many tricks and commands, house, leash and crate trained, and is a novice in agility. She does great in the car, loves going on rides and does not get car sick. She has been through advanced obedience training, and is just an all around great girl. She loves to run and catch her frisbee. She is a bit of a loud mouth but makes great home security. She has been socialized a lot in her life but she prefers hanging out with small dogs, and does not like large dogs. She has lived her last 6 years on a small farm with sheep and chickens, cats and does great with other animals. We have recently moved into a neighborhood with a small yard which works for now, but it is not ideal for her.
Medical issues: In the past few months she has been diagnosed with early kidney disease issues. We have switched her to a renal diet. She has been losing weight but we are keeping a close eye on her kidney levels with her vet. We are finding it difficult to manage this in our stage of life, but hope that someone or a family can devote more time to manage this and would be better for her. At the present stage she needs a special diet, supplemented with some home cooked foods, plenty of water and exercise. She does not currently need medication at this time.
She also has some rectal polyps and has seen a specialist vet for them. They did not recommend surgery, as they have not changed size and don’t seem to bother her. This is just another thing to be aware of and to monitor.
Social: She would do best in a home with her brother Finley, or in a home with smaller breed dogs. She is not a fan of big dogs after having been attacked by one as a puppy. She would also do best in a home with older kids (I’d say age 7 and up, or old enough to be respectful and empathetic), as in her senior age she has become less patient with our toddler and has been known to nip when being surprised or disrespected.
She has a quirk of being a bit sound reactive. Thunderstorms, fireworks, loud noises resembling that do scare her. She will need a quiet place to retreat to hide and feel safe (a closet or bathroom are her go-tos). She is crate trained, and will happily go in there if that is her only option to retreat.
Anything else that you’d like for us to know?Children: Good fit with older kids. Very sweet and loves older kids.
Dogs: Fine with smaller breeds, but not with large breeds.
Farm: Would love farm life. Has been taught to leave chickens alone. Has been around sheep.
